January is National Hobby Month, so it’s only appropriate I mention that I’m a golf guy through and through. I love the game because it has nothing to do with who you are, where you come from, how much money you have, or who your parents are. When you play the game, you don’t have any teammates, and your performance is completely up to you. If you hit your ball in the water, it’s your fault — it’s not the clubs, it’s not the ball, it’s you. That’s what I love about the game; it’s challenging and time-consuming.
I started playing at about 32 years old and fell in love with it. I’m 66 now, and I really wish I had taken up the hobby at a much younger age. Who knows? Maybe I could’ve played in college or gone pro! I’m a fierce competitor with nobody other than myself and am always striving to get better. A great aspect of the game is that the course is constantly changing due to weather and outside forces. No two days on the same course are alike.
Whenever I am able to, I get out on the course. I play a lot and I practice more than I play. It’s a physical game but requires a lot of mental prowess, too. It’s about controlling your emotions, being present, not looking forward to the next hole until you finish up the one you are on, and remembering that whatever happened on the last hole is history and you can’t change that. It’s a lot like life —whatever happened yesterday, you learn from it and move on. So many obstacles and other things can happen while you’re playing the game to keep it exciting the entire time. You can say that I’m addicted!
I’m a good player with a pure love for the game. I would play every single day if I were able to. I don’t need new clubs or a country club membership to keep the game exciting. I’ve made many friends who share the passion of the game and sometimes when we play, we have 27 people in a group, ranging from all different ages and backgrounds. It’s a fantastic way to bring people together to share in a great time. The camaraderie is awesome.
As we slide into 2022, I have many goals for the business to keep expanding at least 10% each year. I also focus on increasing client base, revenue, and the income of my employees. I make it a priority to ensure I am putting 100% into every job. Personally, I also like to set goals for myself. To hold myself accountable, I write them down and share them with others so I can check in periodically to make sure I’m still on track.
I wish each and every one of you a very happy and healthy new year! I look forward to seeing you soon.
